Description: Today’s menu: Spaghetti Nebula!
Ohhhh, are we having spaghetti for lunch today my? Yesss, it’s true—today’s menu features Spaghetti Bolognese, my kids’ absolute favorite dish. And not just any ordinary one—this time I immortalized them in the sky!
This month I headed to plateau Zajamniki, located in Triglav National Park. It was also the only clear night this month sprinkled with stars; thin, wispy clouds kept appearing here and there, slightly spoiling my attempts to photograph this nebula. After thorough prior planning of this composition featuring the Spaghetti Nebula above Mišelj peak, I had 90 minutes to work with, which I used to capture this deep-sky shot.
Since it’s a very faint nebula, I knew I’d need quite a lot of H-alpha data.
This is my first deepscale image of this incredibly beautiful Nebula, which is rarely captured in astro-landscape photography.
The motivation and idea for this target came from Carl and Matej—thanks, guys!
It’s an extremely faint and large supernova remnant, known as Simeis 147 or Sharpless 2-240, and commonly called the Spaghetti Nebula. It lies near the border between the constellations Taurus and Auriga, at an estimated distance of about 3,000 light-years from Earth. Spanning more than 3 degrees across the sky, this reddish emission bubble (from ionized hydrogen) features a complex debris cloud with intricate, filamentary structures stretching roughly 150 light-years from edge to edge. The stellar explosion that created this supernova remnant likely occurred around 40,000 years ago!
